Understanding Tinnitus — You Are Not Alone
Tinnitus is the experience of hearing a sound when no external sound is present. It can take many forms, such as ringing, buzzing, humming, clicking, hissing or rushing, and it may be heard in one ear, both ears or in the middle of your head. Some people spend time searching for where the sound is coming from before realising it is inside them. In some cases it can even sound like music or a tune, known as musical tinnitus.
Tinnitus is common and can affect anyone, including children. According to Tinnitus UK, around 1 in 7 people live with tinnitus that does not go away, although the severity and impact vary greatly from person to person. Some people find it mildly irritating while others feel it disrupts sleep, concentration, work or social life. Whatever your experience, you do not have to just tolerate it. With the right support and strategies, you can reduce its impact and regain a sense of control.
-
Many people get tinnitus, even young children. One in three people get tinnitus at some point in their lives. One in seven people has tinnitus that doesn’t go away. Some people do not mind having tinnitus. Some people find it annoys them. Some people find it really upsets them.
-
Tinnitus is not an illness. Instead, it is a change in the way the brain processes sound. This change can be triggered by many factors, such as:
Ear infections or colds
Excess ear wax
Age-related hearing changes
Exposure to loud noise, such as power tools, concerts or machinery
Stressful life events
Hearing loss
Sometimes tinnitus improves when the underlying cause is treated. For others, management and sound therapy techniques help reduce its impact.
-
The first step in managing tinnitus is understanding what may be causing it and how it affects you. Although there is currently no cure for tinnitus, a tinnitus assessment can help you make sense of your symptoms and give you practical ways to live well with your tinnitus. Many people find that with the right guidance, their tinnitus becomes far less noticeable and much easier to manage.
During your consultation we take the time to explore your experience fully, including:
• How long you have had tinnitus
• Whether it is constant or intermittent
• Whether it changes throughout the day
• Whether it affects one ear or both
• How the sound feels to you, such as high or low pitched
• How it impacts your daily life, sleep or concentrationWe will also complete a detailed medical history and begin with a full ear examination. This includes checking for wax, infection, eardrum health and middle ear function. A comprehensive hearing test is then carried out to identify any hearing loss that may be contributing to your tinnitus.
This thorough approach allows us to create a personalised plan that supports you, helps you understand your tinnitus and gives you strategies to manage it more comfortably.
