What is Microsuction?
Microsuction is a gentle and effective method of earwax removal, the clinician will use a suction device to gently remove any earwax whilst viewing the ear using a head loupe to allow full view of the canal the entire time. This is a very safe method of wax removal; it is fast and efficient. The procedure should be painless, but if you do feel any discomfort, please let your clinician know. After your procedure you will be advised on how to care for your ears.
How does microsuction work?
We use a tiny hoover like device to gently suction the wax from the ear canal. Unlike irrigation it is a dry procedure so there is no need for any water meaning we can offer the procedure often without the use of any softening drops prior to your appointment.
We may use drops during the procedure to help the wax glide out of the ear, however the use of the wrong kind of drops prior to your appointment can make the procedure more difficult.
What is irrigation?
Irrigation is a method of ear wax removal that uses warm water to gently flush softened wax out of the ear canal. It is carried out using a controlled, low-pressure device designed specifically for ear care.
It is not the same as old-fashioned “syringing”. Syringing used a metal syringe and high pressure, which is why it was phased out. Modern irrigation is much safer, gentler and regulated.
How does irrigation work?
Irrigation works by gently introducing warm water into the ear canal to loosen and wash out softened wax. Before we begin, we always check your ears to make sure irrigation is safe and suitable. It is most helpful when wax is too soft for microsuction, positioned awkwardly such as too close to your ear drum or when your ear anatomy makes irrigation the better option.
What’s Included in Your Ear Wax Removal Appointment
At Echowell Audiology, your ear wax removal consultation includes a full professional service from start to finish. We begin by taking a detailed case history to understand your symptoms and overall ear health. Using high-definition video otoscopy, we show you clear images of your ear canals before and after treatment, so you can see exactly what’s happening throughout the process.
Wax is then removed using the method most appropriate for you, depending on the type and consistency of the wax as well as your ear health and ear history. Microsuction uses gentle suction under magnification to remove wax safely and precisely. Irrigation involves warm water to help dislodge wax (not to be confused with older high-pressure syringing techniques). Instrumentation uses specialist tools to manually remove wax while the ear is viewed under magnification.
This comprehensive approach ensures safe, effective ear wax removal and clear results you can see immediately. Book your appointment today for fast, professional relief from blocked ears, reduced hearing, tinnitus, and discomfort.
